Keywords are important part of SEM strategy, as they affect the way search engines rank websites in the organic search results, and they also determine the order of the ads displayed as a part of paid search engine advertising. Before you start using keywords in optimization and advertising, you need to create a list of keyword that you are going to use. Besides keyword ideas to help you create this list, getting estimates related to these keywords could be very helpful for you.

Keyword traffic can be estimated in order to predict the success of a campaign when setting up ads or to simply analyze the performance of certain keywords, in terms of website optimization. A tool that enables you to estimate keyword traffic is Keyword Planner available at Google AdWords. This tool has replaced the Keyword Tool and Traffic Estimator that were previously used in the same purpose.

As the official announcement says:

“With Keyword Planner, we’ve combined the functionality of Keyword Tool and Traffic Estimator to make it easier to plan search campaigns. That’s why Keyword Tool is no longer available. You can use Keyword Planner to find new keyword and ad group ideas, get performance estimates for them to find the bid and budget that are right for you, and then add them to your campaigns.”

What is Keyword Planner?

Keyword Planner is a tool that functions like a search network. It uses various historical statistics related to the keywords search results you use inside the tool, and it presents keyword ideas, as well as the average number of searches for that keyword. Keyword Planner also shows keyword traffic estimates, which include the number of clicks you might get for different bids and budget. The estimates are presented inside graphs and tables, which are generated based on the historical data inside the tool’s database. The graphs and tables enable you to view the most important data and the relevant information about the keywords estimates.

How to use Keyword Planner?

In order to access Keyword Planner, go to your AdWords account (you have to sign in first). Find the option “Tool and Analysis” in the header and choose “Keyword Planner” from the drop-down menu.

You will now access the tool and you will see four options available in the Keyword Planner:

1) Search for new keywords and ad group ideas

If you are in the process of setting up your advertising campaign, or if you need ideas for keywords to be used in your blog articles, this is the option for you. This option can be used for finding new keywords or for expanding the list of the existing keywords. The greatest advantage of using Keyword Planner for searching new keyword ideas is that you get estimates on keyword searches in the previous period, depending on the date range you have chosen. Not only will you get new ideas on which keyword to add to your keyword list, but you will also be able to sort the keywords based on relevance, using the estimates available for each keyword.

So, in case you already have some ideas for keywords you want to use, this option will provide insights into whether those keywords are really worth the work. Although you might think that a certain keyword should be used in your campaign, that keyword actually might trigger a few searches, which means that the number of opportunities, of your ad being shown for that keyword, is lower.

In addition, this option can also help with getting ideas on long-tail keywords. Although long-tail keywords are more specific phrases, with lower search volume, they are more likely to lead to a conversion, which is why you need to consider using long-tail keywords in your campaign. Estimates for long-tail keywords are also available inside the Keyword Planner results.

Use Keyword Planner to enter one or more options available:

– Words or phrases that describe your product

– The URL of the landing page from your website

– Select the product category

Additionally you can choose targeting options that will help you narrow down the search. After you have finished filling out these data, you can click on “Get ideas” in order to generate a table of estimates based on the data you have provided.

Now you are able to review the list of keywords, how competitive they are, as well as the estimated daily traffic for those keywords. You can add the keywords to your advertising campaign directly, by clicking on “Add to Plan”.

2) Get search volume for a list of keywords or group them into ad groups

While the first option helps you with finding the keyword ideas that are suitable for your campaign, the second option available at Keyword Planner will help you estimate the search volume of the keywords that you have entered manually or uploaded via CSV file. In this case, you already have a list of keywords you plan to use, but you want to investigate how popular those keywords are. This option also helps with grouping keywords into ad groups, which is very important when setting up the structure of the campaign using Google AdWords tool.

You should simply copy the list of the keywords into the first field (type one keyword per line, or separate them by commas) or upload the list from your computer, set up the targeting options and click on “Get search volume”.

The results show you the historical statistics of your keywords, such as monthly search volume, as well as competition data. All of this can help you analyze the potential performance of the keywords you use in your campaign. Have in mind that none of these keywords will be directly added to your advertising campaign, until you have clicked on the option to add them to the campaign.

3) Get traffic estimates for a list of keywords

If you want to get the estimated number of clicks and costs for a specific keyword, you will use the third option. This will show you how the keyword will perform based on the historical data and trends in searches, which will allow you to analyze the potential benefits of using certain keyword in your campaign. You can enter keyword list manually or you can upload it as CSV file. Choose targeting options and in the end click on “Get estimates”.

The graph will display the expected clicks and costs, as well as impressions, for a specific time period. In addition, you can enter your bid at the top of the page in order to get detailed estimates for the keyword in terms of costs. The ideas in this table are again divided into two sections, ad group and keyword.

4) Multiply keyword lists to get new keyword ideas

This feature enables you to create new keyword combinations by combining two or more keyword lists. This is a great option to use in case you need assistance with creating a list of long-tail keywords. If you own a local business, this option can be used to get suggestions on how to combine two lists of keywords, one that refers to the location of your business, and the second, which contains the keywords describing your business. Use this option to generate new ideas by adding keywords manually into the two boxes. If you have more than two lists, click on the “X” mark to add a new box.

In the end, you should set up targeting options, and choose between “Get estimates” and “Get search volume”. The results shown in the Keyword Planner will be a combination of the keywords you have provided in the boxes, and you will see the data related to those keywords and keyword phrases.

How to customize your search?

Searches you conduct through Keyword Planner are general, as they use the database for all locations and all languages by default. In order to get as accurate estimates as possible, instead of using default settings, you need to customize your search by using different targeting and filtering options.

Targeting

Targeting allows you to see the traffic estimates and keyword ideas based on your settings. This is particularly useful option for local businesses, or for those who want to focus search estimates on a specific language. Here are the targeting options available inside Keyword Planner:

Location – In case you do not want to get estimates for global searches, you should enter a specific geographical location, such as a country, a region or a city. Once you provide a location, the option “Nearby” can be used to automatically add nearby areas into the targeting settings.

Language – The following option allows you to get estimates related to a specific language.

Google – Google network setting is chosen by default. If you want to include Google search partners into the estimates, choose the corresponding option. Google search partners are Google’s websites such as Google Maps, as well as the websites that show Google ads.

Negative keywords – Using a negative keyword means that your ad will not be shown if the negative keyword is used in the search query. Use this option if you have negative keywords as a part of your campaign and if you want to exclude them from the generated search and traffic volume estimate results.

Date range – The following option allows you to customize your search based on a specific date range. Choosing a custom date is especially important for seasonal campaigns. You can also compare two time periods in order to explore the trends related to a keyword, which will show you whether the popularity of a certain keyword is growing or falling.

Filtering

The following filtering options allow you to get even more specific search estimates for the keywords of your interest. Filter your results by:

Keyword filters – Here is where you can see the keywords based on the number of average monthly searches. This option also allows you to filter keywords based on competitiveness, so you can choose high, medium or low competition as your filter.

Keyword options – Several options are available inside this filter and they are all related to the types of keywords based on which you want to filter the results. You will be able to select one of two options provided for each filter, which either includes or excludes the keyword from the search.

Include / Exclude – The following option allows you to add a specific keyword you want to be included into the search that will generate estimates. If you want to exclude a keyword from this estimate, use negative keyword option available in the targeting options.
