Yelp is an online guide that helps people find places based on the online reviews and comments. It functions like a social networking site with business reviews helping people find out about popular places in a certain area.
The company was founded in 2004 as an email service for helping people exchange local business information and recommendations. The service was then expanded in order to include social networking features, to enable discounts, as well as a mobile app.
Users rate places using one to five star rating system. They can also submit a written review, and other users can react, answer, etc.
Yelp sorts the results based on its algorithm which is supposed to show the best results at the top. Various factors are taken into consideration with this algorithm, including text review, the number of reviews, user location, etc.
