Theory

Infographics or information graphic are excellent for presenting complex information in a illustrative and simplified way. Data visualization is especially recommended nowadays as everyone is trying to get people interested in what they do.

While using the internet and social media, people are becoming exposed to more and more information, which makes them less focused when reading. This is why a nicely designed infographic can help you grab the attention of the readers.

Before we explain the actual process of creating an infographic, we have to focus on several things:

The type of the infographic

Platforms for designing infographics usually have pre-designed infographics divided in groups or categories, based on the type of the infographics you would like to make. This is very useful when creating an infographic, as you need different layout if you want to create an infographic about sport, from the one you would use if the topic is related to business.

The topic of the infographic

The next part of the process is to choose a topic for the infographic. Obviously, the topic should be related to your business. For example, if you own a marketing company, creating an infographic related to this topic can help you attract people who are interested in this topic, whereas if you create an infographic about sport, you are unlikely to attract anyone interested in marketing.

Guidelines

When creating an infographic you must pay attention to copyright issues. You should not use additional images unless you have permission to use them. The same goes for videos and text content.

You should also pay attention to the terms and conditions of the platform you are using. Terms of use clearly define user responsibilities, restrictions and licences, so you should go through this document before you decide to create an infographics using a specific platform.

If you are using data from external sources to illustrate a certain point in the infographic, you should include the links of the sources and state the author if you are using a quotation.

As we have said, we are using easel.ly platform to illustrate the process of creating an infographic.

easel.lyTitle

When you come up with the title, use a search engine to check if there already is an infographic with the same title. You should avoiding making the infographics with a title that already exists, as it might be more difficult for users to find your infographic when searching the internet.

Content

After you have a title, you should add content to the infographic. The content should be relevant to the topic, concise and practical. If you are using quotes, make sure that you have provided the name of the resource used.

There are different types of content that can be added to the infographic, which can be customized so that you can add custom text and data. Some of the most common types of content that can be added (which are also available within easel.ly platform include the following:

Adding text – This segment can also be customized, so that you can choose different layout for the title, subtitles, quotes, etc.
Adding charts – This is a great way to represent different sets of statistic data, in formats such as pie chart, bar, table, pictorial, hierarchy, etc.
Adding a photo or a video – Some platforms allow adding other types of visual content, such as photos and videos into the infographics, which will help you illustrate a certain point.
Adding a map – This element is useful if the topic of the infographic is related to location and data across different locations on the map. This options is available with some of the platforms for creating infographics, such as infogr.am.
